Passalacqua, one of the 100 GREATEST MASTERPICES OF AMERICAN LITERATURE series, published in 1977. Jack London, who lived from 1876-1916, was self-educated and self-made. Born an illegitimate child in San Francisco, London grew up among the Oakland waterfront, read voluminously and attend grammar school irregularly until the age of fourteen. The sea beckoned and in 1893, young London signed up as a seaman on a sealing cruise that took him to Japan. After his return he tramped extensively through the U.S. and Canada, spent a semester at the University of California, and joined the first gold rush to the Klondike in 1897. "The Call of the Wild," originally published in 1903, is the story of BUCK, offspring of a St. Bernard and Scotch shepherd dog. The dog and its owner live in CALIFORNIA but the dog is stolen and shipped to the ALASKAN KLONDIKE. There he is turned into a sledge dog, and wins the leadership of the team from Spitz. To his master, JOHN THORNTON, he gives his entire allegiance, even breaking the ice and dragging a thousand-pound load on a sledge in order to win a wager. After Thornton is murdered by Indians, Buck responds to the call of the wild, and abandons human civilization to lead a wolf pack. 157 pages. I offer Combined shipping.
