Description: Franz Xaver Wolf (1896-1989) Austrian German Genre Scene Family Child Interior Oil on Board Up for sale is c.1940's original oil on board painting by Austrian artist Franz Xaver Wolf (1896-1989). The work is titled "The Family Of The Painter" and is depicting a young woman her baby child in the detailed interior as well as the portrait of the artist who paints them in the mirror. It is exceptionally well executed employing a sophisticated knowledge of light, color and perspective. Given the title of the work as well as the fact that found in my research another painting of this particular and the child; also a few other paintings by Franz Xaver Wolf with the same man being a part of the compositions, my theory is that this is perhaps a portrait of his own family with a self-portrait in it. The painting itself is measuring about 20” (51 cm) by 16” (41 cm), and frame is measuring about 25” (64 cm) by 21” (54 cm). It is signed by the artist in the upper right as well as it bears artist's sealed label verso. This painting would be a very sound investment and a great addition to any collection. Franz Xaver Wolf (1896-1989)Franz Xaver Wolf was born on 11 June 1896 in Vienna, Austria to Franz Wolf and Josefa König. Although little has been discovered about his early life, he is known to have attended the Fine Art Academy in Vienna before moving to Germany to study at the Munich Academy. It is possible that he was related to the painter and lithographer Franz Wolf (1795-1859) as their work shares some similarities. He was part of the Munich School of genre and landscape painters and became known for his highly detailed genre paintings featuring clerics or figures in costumes. In addition to genre subjects he also painted still lifes, usually of flowers. As well as working in oil, he was also a skilled engraver and produced a number of etchings. Wolf married Maria Albertine Zlepnig on 20 March, 1928 and together they lived in Vienna. He lived at a number of addresses including 10 Lerchengasse and 7 Heiliggeistrasse. By 1955, he had settled at 33 Castellezgasse and was still earning his living as a successful artist. His work can be found in many private and public collections including Berlin and Vienna museums.
