Description: This is a limited lithograph that was produced by the Donald Art Company. In 1939, Donald Van Emden and his wife, Serine, were unable to return from their U.S. honeymoon to their homeland due to the escalation of WWII. They remained in the United States after most of their family members were killed. They started the Donald Art Company in their living room. It grew into the Donald Art Plaza in 1965 built in Port Chester, NY with a sales office in NYC and Los Angeles. Donald partnered with Gus Montovano of Litho-craft of New England to develope a technique for printing on artist canvas, textured to feel like brushstrokes. This unique offset lithograph process allowed printing on canvas, cotton, and a type of velvet material. The Donald Art Company commissioned artists to create paintings for these prints, or bought the rights to originals and advertised in newspapers and magazines. This is why many people recognize these prints from childhood memories, and created the nostalgic air and high collector’s demand because each print was printed from the original in the Donald Art Company collection. This direct collaboration with the artist means the print is truly a limited edition with high demand. “Free As The Wind” was printed in 1960 and is one of the most popular prints produced by the Donald Art Company. This print is very desired and highly collectible. The artist was August Albo. This artist was born in 1893 in Estonia, and emigrated to NYC in 1951. He painted a number of paintings under an abstract style, but turned toward a more traditional style. He excelled in landscapes, still life’s, florals, and genre all with popular worldwide appeal, but reached the pinnacle of success with “Free As The Wind” This Art lithograph is in good condition. It will need to be stretched along the bottom (see photos). It is not torn and hard to see…there is a white line (see photos). The canvas size is 24 by 18 inches. There are some slight signs of wear from being in a frame. This is the original stretched canvas. The colors are unfaded, and the print has a wonderful depth to the highlights and shadows…showing the quality of the print. This is a rare limited edition print that will be a wonderful purchase for collector and equine lover alike. Please continue to visit my "old-new" store as I will be adding on an almost daily basis.
