Description: Hubert Ponscarme trained with Oudiné, he was named Chevalier of the Legion of Honor in 1867, and he became professor of medal-engraving at the École des Beaux-Arts in 1871, where he taught many distinguished pupils over 30 years, including Roty, Charpentier, Rivet, and Yencesse. Ponscarme was credited by his contemporaries with revolutionizing medallic art, starting with this portrait of Joseph Naudet in 1867. The Naudet medal achieved a new harmony and unity by giving the field a matte surface rather than a polished one, by subtle modeling of the figure’s features, and by eliminating the raised rim. Contemporaries praised Ponscarme effusively: “The modern reawakening or renaissance of the medal is identified with the name of Hubert Ponscarme. In his medal of Joseph Naudet, in which he has been hailed as the forerunner of the modern school, Ponscarme broke away from the traditional treatment and set a new standard for the medal” (Catalogue of the International Exhibition of Contemporary Medals. The American Numismatic Society. March 1910, new and revised edition, 1911, p. xvii). In effect, this is the first Art Nouveau medal. Joseph Naudet (1786-1878) was a respected historian of ancient Rome. This medal was struck to celebrate his fiftieth anniversary as a member of the Acadèmie des Inscriptions et Belles-lettres. This medal will appeal to collectors interested in classical history, and in the evolution of the 19th-century French medal. Extremely fine. Nice light brown patina, some coppery redness.
