Description: Title of the plate: "VALEUR DES ASSIGNATS ET AUTRES PAPIERS MONNOIES Depuis l'époque de leur émission en France, jusqu'à celle ou ils ont cessé d'avoir cours " Large unusual antique decorative plate showing the ancient bank note, named Assignat, used during the French Revolution at the end of 18th century. The plate is drawn and copper engraved by J. Benizy, dit Dubuisson. The assignat was a bank note issued by France between 1789 and 1797, during the French Revolution (1789-1799). Initially issued in the form of bonds, the assignat was intended to stimulate the French economy as a quick way to repay the national debt. Originally issued in December 1789, the assignats were guaranteed by the value of the national property that the National Constituent Assembly had recently seized from the crown and the Catholic Church. The Assembly’s plan was to provide its creditors with assignats, which were bonds with an interest rate of 5%, which they could buy back to purchase these national lands. Despite the initial success, assignats quickly lost their value, especially after they began to be used as currency. This was due to the French public’s distrust of paper money, the lack of investor confidence in the stability and credibility of the revolutionary government, and the outbreak of French revolutionary wars (1792-1802). In 1797 the assignats ceased to circulate and were replaced by the Franc.
