This represents a woodblock print (Ex-Libris) by Fumio Kitaoka for inclusion of a calendar published in 2003. Publisher: Nippon ExLibris Association Month/Date: April, 2003 Woodblock Theme: “Ancient Egyptians View of Earth” - First, there was Geb (Green Figure), the god of the earth. Then, there was Nut (Yellow Figure), the goddess of the sky. Shu (Black Figure) lifted Nut up so that she became a canopy over Geb. Shu was said to make himself manifest in the beams of the Sun (Orange orb) by day and in the light of the Moon by night. The ancient Egyptians believed that Ra (Sun) was swallowed every night by the sky goddess Nut, and was reborn every morning. I believe that the black branching of Shu represent night (or death). Translation (Sheet): “Month/Year” at the top followed by “Fumio Kitaoka” in Kanji and English. The last two lines are the name of the gallery (Chikuhoudou) and owner of the bookplate (Yonezou Higuchi). Woodblock: 2.25” W x 2.75” H Condition: Excellent condition with no damage to the sheet or print. Print is tipped to the calendar sheet.
