Description: Furyo (1983 film) (Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence)DVD ORIGINAL ZONE 2SynopsisThe film chronicles the interpersonal relationships and cultural differences between four men in a Japanese prison camp in Java during World War II in 1942. The characters are Major Jack Celliers (David Bowie), a rebellious prisoner tormented by a guilty secret from his youth; Captain Yonoi (Ryūichi Sakamoto), the young commander of the camp who is entirely devoted to his country; Lieutenant Colonel John Lawrence (Tom Conti), a British officer who has lived in Japan and speaks fluent Japanese; and Sergeant Hara (Takeshi Kitano), who seems to be a brute but still has some humanity and maintains a special and friendly relationship with Lawrence, made delicate by the conditions of war.Several hundred English, Australian, New Zealand and Dutch soldiers are crammed into this camp. They are furyo (Japanese term for "prisoner of war").Uncompromising, Captain Yonoi imposes iron discipline on everyone. Respecting the codes of the samurai, he despises prisoners who prefer captivity to suicide, contrary to Japanese culture. Tensions between the two communities increase with the arrival of a new British prisoner, Major Jack Celliers. The latter is transferred from Jakarta, where he was convicted of landing by parachute and then attacking a Japanese convoy with the help of local guerrillas. He refuses to submit and continually mocks Yonoi; a psychological war then begins between them to gain the upper hand. Celliers' rebellious behavior elicits a sense of admiration from Yonoi. One of the axes of the film is the ambiguous relationship between these two men trapped in the war, in a closed place, the camp, conducive to the blossoming of all feelings...Distribution David Bowie (VF: Michel Papineschi5): Major Jack Celliers Tom Conti (VF: Pierre Arditi): Lieutenant-Colonel John Lawrence Jack Thompson (VF: Roger Carel): Captain Hicksley Ryūichi Sakamoto as Captain Yonoi Takeshi Kitano (VF: Bing Yin): Sergeant Gengo Hara Johnny Okura as guard Kanemoto Alistair Browning as Guard Jong James Malcolm: Celliers' brother Chris Broun (VF: Damien Boisseau): Celliers aged 12 Yūya Uchida: The Commander of the Military Prison Ryunosuke Kaneda: the president of the court Takashi Naitō as Lieutenant Iwata Tamio Ishikura: The Prosecutor Hideo Murota: The new camp commander Rokkō Toura: the interpreter Kan Mikami as Lieutenant Ito- Format: 1.85 - 16/9 - 4/3 - Languages, versions: French, see photos- Subtitles: English with French subtitles, view the photo- Bonus: no- Duration: 1H28 minutes approx.Fast and carefully protected shipping + Postal trackingThe film chronicles the interpersonal relationships and cultural differences between four men in a Japanese prison camp in Java during World War II in 1942.
