If there is no meal, you don’t want art. A picture is for people who have already eaten.” Born in Aguascalientes, Mexico, Gabo now lives and is inspired by Baja California Sur. When viewing Gabo's works Raquel Tibol proclaims Gabo to be Tamayo . A comment he (Gabo) in turn negates. Gabo's work is surreal & cubic, not only containing the colors of Mexico but also the spirit and soul of the Mexican people. His works combine ancestral references to Mexican identity with the use of the surrealistic abstraction and expressionistic colors thus combining all three major European art movements into his singular vision. Tibol says today , that like his predecessors "Gabo , will become Gabo one day , but for now he is Tamayo ..... Gabo's Art is as complex as the Southern Baja land he had lived and worked for near 50 years.. There is high country and low deserts. There are also two very diverse water climates provided by the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortez... The Tropic of Cancer passes directly over his main studio & gallery in Todos Santos and adds that tropical touch of green to the kilometers south to Cabo San Lucas . At 58 years of age Gabo's body of work is incredible in that it is both simple yet complex and embodies the history of the land, Gabo touches something deeper in his mysterious forms and glowing Mexican colors. Our own imagination may seem minuscule in comparison . Gabo has his best works yet to come... It is not possible to disregard what has been considered the influences of the Pre-Colombian world in the work of Gabo whose paintings display a surprising familiarity with Pre Hispanic Art. We await the second half of this great artist's life with excitement ( by JOHN BAROUS ) History of Gabo GABO Born in 1952 in the Triana quarter of the city of Aguascalientes Mexico where he began his studies at the school of Fine Arts at the age of eight. (Triana, named after a neighborhood in Seville, has the most Spanish influence in its architecture, and is the oldest neighborhood in the city.) Between 1966 and 1976 he lived an Tijuana and Ciudad Juarez where he worked in graphic design, TV commercials, production and then published a book of poems entitled "Virvir no es suficiente" (Living is not enough) His first extended trip to Europe in 1977 took him to Madrid Spain where he studied painting and graphic arts and to Pairs where he established lasting bonds with contemporary artists and the artistic milieu, bonds which would strengthen in subsequent trips to Europe. Returning to Mexico in 1978 he moved to La Paz BCS, a city he would call home except for a two year period spent in Tijuana. There he worked at the Tijuana Cultural Center which he shared with Alvaro Blancarte, taught silk screening, organized important auctions and painted a ruperstrian mural covering 280 m2 in the Colonia Libertad. In La Paz BCS his numerous activities include: setting up his own graphic design and publicity studio, the opening of the Orsay Gallery where he organized over 200 exhibits of Mexican and foreign artist and the coordinating and promoting of a variety of Art events. , . In 1998 he created and organized the Art Festival in Todos Santos. In 2000 he created and organized the Art Fiesta dedicated for Painting with 23 art exhibits of national and local artists including the number one art critical in Mexico Raquel Tibol. Gabo created the Tianguis de Arte “La Bajadita”, First Whale Festival, First Performance in La Paz Bienal of Californias; he was member of state Cultural Council of Arts and Judge of State Hands Crafts competition. Mexico 2008 Entijuanarte 08 Centro Cultural Tijuana (CECUT) The heroism of his grandfather. Don José Guadalupe Romo Romo, Gabo’s maternal grandfather, lived in a village in the state of Aguascalientes in western central Mexico. The name of the village: Tierra Ajena. It was during the Cristero War of 1926-1929, the armed uprising against the anti-Catholic Mexican government. Don José was giving protection to the Cristeros, and he allowed his house to be used for religious services. One day, a traitor alerted federal troops. Don José did what he could to enable the parishioners to escape, then waited for the troops to arrive. A speedy trial ended in a sentence of hanging. But in that rocky village on the plains, it took a long time to find a tree for the execution. On the first attempt, the hangman’s knot unraveled, sending the condemned man crashing ...to the ground. He got up and shook off the dirt. “Don’t be idiots,” he is reported to have said, before tying the knot himself and surrendering to his fate. This is a source of pride for Gabo and part of his own identity. Don José had come from Europe to this foreign land -- to a place actually named “someone else’s land.” Because of the war, Gabo’s mother was forced to move away; she, too, grew up in “someone else’s land.” Gabo feels that he, himself, lives in a place that is not his own. More than that, Gabo believes all of us live in someone else’s land. We are children of people who come from somewhere else. We are guardians of a world belonging to future generations. And we dream, he says, about becoming better people in our adopted home.. “No, a picture is a pleasure,” he says. “A picture is a digestive – a drink for after dinner. If there is no meal, you don’t want art. A picture is for people who have already eaten.” Gabo’s paintings have been compared to those of Marc Chagall. They’ve also been described as “garish and thought-provoking, bizarre images from a fertile mind.” In Gabo's art we are reminded of Baja California’s famous pinturas rupestres, the prehistoric cave murals of human figures, four-legged animals, birds and arrows. “Even the creators of the pinturas rupestrescame from elsewhere,” notes Gabo “You want to take a picture home, hang it on your wall. You want something happy, something amusing. You’re not going to pay to be depressed. You are going to pay for pleasure. You say, ‘Why bring more problems into my house? I already have lots of those.’” Art is a sacred niche for Gabo, where he can develop spiritually. It’s a quest for truth. “It is a language of feeling with colours and with forms that are feelings. And the success depends on the honesty with which one paints.” Gabo signs his work GABO. He doesn’t use his full name. That’s because he grew up with so many other Gabriels: his father, his sister Gabriela and three more Gabriels in the family next door. His mother called him Gabo; the name became his artistic signature. “I paint stars, I paint moons, I paint enormous spaces.” The earth, itself, is on a journey, he says, as it travels in the Milky Way. “The possibilities are very large. And so I always, in my own construction, want to reach toward the sky.”
