A gorgeous transparent and gemmy ¾” Orthorhombic bipyramidal Barite crystal is seen perched from a vug-like matrix, covered with a bed of small clear to translucent crystals that even penetrate through the base of the matrix. The smaller crystals also have a sparkle and display a variety of crystal habits – flattened tabular with pointed ends; prismatic with pyramidal points; a very fascinating specimen indeed! Colorado produces some of the finest Barites and this featured specimen comes from this locale. This gemmy orthorhombic bipyramidal Barite crystal also displays crystallized planes within that exhibit strong double refraction properties which allows light to flow through and/or reflect upon it. When held under light and at certain angles, spots/peaks of rainbow hues can be seen as shown in some of the pictures. This specimen displays and shows very well. It can also stand by itself, with a sturdy matrix. Please note that the lines on the matrix are the natural occurring layered growths. Specimen Background information: Barite is a mineral composed of barium sulfate (BaSO4). It receives its name from the Greek word "barys" which means "heavy." This name is in response to barite's high specific gravity of 4.5, which is exceptional for a nonmetallic mineral. Barite is well-known for its great range of colors and varied crystal forms and habits. Barite can be colorless, white, light blue, light yellow, light red, or light green. The Barite in this featured specimen is clear, transparent and gemmy with an orthorhombic bipyramidal formation habit. Barite is easily identifiable by its heavy weight, since most similar minerals are much lighter. It sometimes forms tufacious mounds from deposition of hot, barium-rich springs. Barite often occurs as concretions and void-filling crystals in sediments and sedimentary rocks. Barite is also found as concretions in sand and sandstone.
