Circa 1870 Publication: Chicago: Gentile Photographer, [circa 1870] Description: Albumen cabinet photograph. Image size approximately 4.75" x 3.75" on a thick card mount measuring 6.5" x 4.25". Several very small spots, mostly confined at the margins, but a couple near the top of the image, very good or better. An image of nine baseball players, in their late teens or early 20s, wearing particularly elegant uniforms, five seated in the front and four standing in the rear, two of the players are holding bats. The team is unidentified but almost certainly a Chicago College team, with the apparent wherewithal to afford better quality uniforms, with particularly striking belts and stockings. Undated but based on the uniforms and the bats, very likely in the first half of the 1870s. Noted Chicago photographer Carlo Gentile's mark on both the front and back. The verso is pink with elaborate gold lettering and advertises Gentile's Gallery on the corner of State and Washington Streets as "The only Gallery using a Water Power Elevator in the World". Born in Italy, Gentile was peripatetic, and did much photography in the American West and of Native Americans, and traveled with Ned Buntline and Buffalo Bill Cody on some their tours. He eventually mostly settled in Chicago where he became known for his photographs of Chicago buildings. A nice, pleasing image of an early Chicago base ball team.
