Description: George Cruikshank, illustrator. William Cowper. The Diverting History of John Gilpin: Showing How he Went Farther than He Intended, and Came Safe Home Again. With Six Illustrations by George Cruikshank, engraved on wood by Thompson, Branston, Wright, Slader, and White. London: Charles Tilt, Fleet Street, 1828. First Edition. 12mo (5 3/8 x 4 1/8 inches). 20, [4, publisher's catalogue] pages. With engraved frontispiece and five engraved plates. Original publisher's printed wrappers. [bound together with:] George Cruikshank, illustrator. William Cowper. Six Illustrations to Cowper's Diverting History of John Gilpin, by George Cruikshank, engraved on wood by Thompson, Branston, Wright, Slader, and White. London: Charles Tilt, Fleet Street, 1828. First Edition. The rare issue of Cruikshank's plates, proofs on India paper. Octavo (approximately 9 x 6 inches). Six wood engravings by George Cruikshank on India paper, printed rectos only. Original publisher's printed stitched paper wrappers. Two separate publications held together in a calf covering with brads, a sort of informal leather binding. Unfortunately, the leather has severely browned the wrappers, and because of the differing sizes of the books, has not protected the larger book around the edges. Leather is heavily worn around the edges, and with a tear at the top and scuffing. Two engraved bookplates for Micajah Pratt Clough. Various offsetting to the adjacent wrappers as can be seen in the photographs. Smaller book with moderate foxing and some thumb soiling to the plates and sheets. Larger book heavily worn and tattered around the edges on the wrappers, proof plates are slightly foxed and soiled, but look quite nice except for a small dampstain tidemark to the bottom edges (2 inches wide x 1/2 inch high or so). Altogether, a good only copy because of the offsetting and chipping to wrappers, but contents still quite bright and very good. "The illustrations (India proofs) were also issued unmounted separately without text, in brown paper printed wrappers, in royal octavo." (Cohn 169).
