George Macdonald Fraser (1925-2008) was a Scottish author who served in the Burma Campaign in the Second World War, and was later an officer in the Gordon Highlanders. He found fame in 1969 with the publication of Flashman, based on the imagined later life of the bully from the Victorian novel Tom Brown's Schooldays. He wrote 12 Flashman novels in all.
