September 1, 1995 Esquire Magazine ~ John JFK Kennedy Jr. on the cover. Cover Story: CITIZEN KENNEDY by infamous, provocative, cultural journalist, and best-selling author MICHAEL GROSS, who has a long history with John Jr. ~ On the run from the press all his life, John F. Kennedy Jr. joins the media pack. The Inside Story of John F. Kennedy Jr.'s George Magazine. Michael Gross, a former contributor to Kennedy’s magazine “George,” said this job “provided access to real life.” “He used to bicycle to work every day,” he said. “And, you know, don't you just love the image of John Kennedy Jr. on his bicycle, free as a bird … This is a beautiful image of someone who lives in a cage, finding a way to escape.” Even as Kennedy was humbly working beside his colleagues at the district attorney’s office, the son of one of America’s most famous families seemed to also be breaking hearts on the courtroom floor. “He appeared before a judge in Brooklyn, I think," Gross said. "And the judge actually had to say to his stenographer in the courtroom, 'Try not to drool." In 1995, as John Kennedy Jr was launching George ~ Not Just Politics As Usual magazine, there were 3 national magazines that profiled John Jr and all had articles about how this new venture was going to play out. This Esquire article is one of these 3 articles. The final irony, perhaps, was that none of the 3 editors who put Mr. Kennedy on the cover in 1995, said they believed George would succeed; the demonstrated interest of the reading public in politics will not sustain a glossy, high-circulation venture, they said. The editors' feeling was that Mr. Kennedy sells better from the cover of other magazines, with the mystique intact. In the '90s, John F. Kennedy Jr. founded and edited a revolutionary magazine called George, which covered politics like it was pop culture. Was it folly, or a glimpse of the Trumpian future? The article was written by Michael Gross, who once wrote a profile of Mr. Kennedy for New York Magazine. (I have this very hard to find issue of New York Magazine listed in another listing). Mr. Kosner, who now edits Esquire, and who has a passing acquaintance with Mr. Kennedy. His son was Mr. Kennedy's high school classmate. "The fact is he's a very, very nice young man," said Mr. Kosner. The Esquire article, is a personality profile, written without the participation of the personality. Esquire's article is longer than the other articles about this are and seems to have dredged up more people with at least a passing acquaintance with Mr. Kennedy; it's also more sympathetic, giving the guy the benefit of the doubt and even lauding him for trying a brave new venture. "He's a natural cover for us, an Esquire guy in terms of his age, his ambitions and his success with women," said David Hirshey, deputy editor of Esquire. "Besides, his father has always done well for us." (President Kennedy appeared on five Esquire covers.) At 34, J.F.K. Jr. Is Finally Trying to Make His Mark," the cover line said. Finally? The problem with Mr. Kennedy, the magazine said, is that "John Kennedy is like a regular guy, but he isn't one." "We got inside his soul in a way our competitors didn't do," is how Mr. Parker put it. "The same thing that made Ed Kosner and Maynard Parker and me put him on the cover is why advertising agencies take meetings with him," Mr. Anderson said. "We're not immune to the Kennedy fascination. But the fact that he's plunging into this actual profession. It makes us feel either like we're doing something glamorous or that he's doing something as grotty as the rest of us." Including the magazine’s all-time best-selling reported cover story on John F. Kennedy, Jr.), of Travel & Leisure, and of Talk; a Senior Writer at Esquire, a Senior Editor at George, and Real Estate Editor of Avenue. He was Editor-in-Chief of Avenue, New York’s original society magazine, from October 2016 until March 2019. Until it closed in 2021, he was also a Contributing Editor of Departures, the travel and luxury magazine, which called him a “master chronicler of behind-closed-doors lives.” Also Inside: FEATURES THE LONG, HARD DAYS OF DR. From 1936 to 1972 the weekly publication of Life served as the nation's foremost authority on cultural trends and the state of the American experience. It ceased publication until 1978, when it returned as a monthly until the year 2000. Since then Life has returned as a weekly, published in 70 newspapers across the nation. The company is also well-known for its many books on photography, writing and, in conjunction with Time, many self-help and 'how to' volumes. Life magazine continues to be one of the most important publications in the country, both for its current issues as well as its back catalog. Researchers, designers, and the simply curious use Life magazine as a reference for style, trends, celebrity news, as well as the award-winning photography that first made the publication famous. By now there is hardly anybody in the United States who isn't familiar with both the logo (white lettering on a red rectangle) as well any number of photographs first published in the magazine, like the famous V-Day kiss in Times Square. Life magazine is dedicated to continuing its place in American publication history, and back issues of the magazine can fetch considerable figures if in good condition. The magazine has gone from being simply another magazine to a sought-after collectible. Collections of Life magazine are often found at auction. Where Life will go in the future is unknown, but its resiliency has proven to be formidable, and most experts agree that Life will remain an iconic, growing force in American culture for years to come.
