Baldwin class 10-28 D 141 to Georgia Car & Locomotive Co. #434 to Lyon Lumber Co. #10, Garyville, LA, on 1/6/1920. From the 1850s to the early 1900’s the port of Darien was the largest lumber shipping port in the State of Georgia. Logs would flow down the Altamaha River Basin to be rough cut at various mills around the mouth of the Altamaha River. As various railroads finaly began crossing the Basin and syphoning away logs to Brunswick and Savannah, one lumber manufacutrer (JK Clarke) began the Darien & Western in 1894. Purchasing the Collins & Reidsville and merging it into the D&W in 1904, and then building the Reidsville & Southeastern to connect the two roads in 1905. Finally they merged everything into the new Georgia Coast & Piedmont in 1906. However the price to form the GC&P was steep and it soon failed on the intrest payments on it Bonds and was soon taken over by the bond company, the FJ Lisman & Co. Of New York. The Altamaha River Basin was cut out by 1918 and the road failed and was partially scrapped, only the line from Collins to Glennville was saved to become the Collins & Glennville RR in 1922. The C&G lasted almost 20 years when it was abandoned in 1941-1942. NEW 5X8 FULL FRAME PHOTO FROM ORIGINAL 120, 616, 4x5, 5x7 OR 122 SIZE NEGATIVEs I do combine shipping on all orders.
