Description: Germany: Baden Medal for the 1849 Rebellion. Bronze medal issued to Baden and Hessian troops that suppressed the rebels during the Baden Revolution, April 1848-23 July 1849. The revolt began as a result of democratic demands for the emancipation of the serfs, the abolition of the feudal system, and the adoption of a constitution. On 4 March 1848, a revolt broke out in North Baden, and a provisional republic was proclaimed on 12 April 1848. Hessian and Baden troops crushed the uprising at the Scheideck Pass on 20 April, but the revolution continued, spreading to other German states. The revolutionaries fought on until July 1849, when the provisional government was forced to surrender. The reverse inscription on the medal translates to, “For the Brave Liberating Army 1849.” Medal is in near extremely fine condition, on scarce original ribbon. Authenticity guaranteed; 14-day return privilege (30 days overseas), excluding postage, provided item is returned in same condition when sold.
