Meet the ZIKA VIRUS, although hopefully, only HERE! First isolated in a caged monkey with a fever in Uganda in 1947, it appeared at first glance, as a possible variant of Yellow Fever. By 1952, antibodies were first detected in local human residents and by 1954, the same antibodies were found to be much more widespread throughout the region. It wasn't until 1964 when a researcher, working to isolate the virus from mosquitoes, became the first confirmed human infection, himself! From then until 2007, there were only 13 other confirmed cases, even as later studies showed the disease had been silently spreading. A minor outbreak in Micronesia 2007 served as a warning. Soon, more cases began to appear throughout the southeast Asia region, extending into nearby pacific island countries, before "suddenly" exploding in Brazil in early 2015. From there, it quickly spread through South America, Central America, the Caribbean, and into North America. While the number of cases fell off quickly after that year, and with vaccines in various stages of development but none currently available, ZIKA VIRUS is considered "a highly significant and long-term problem." Considering that it has been shown to cause serious birth defects (since it is passed from Mother to developing fetus), can trigger serious side-effects in adults, can be passed through blood transfusions, and can be further spread through sexual contact, it would seem that further attention and alarm is well warranted!
