Description: This is a very rare vintage Glycine Airman SST “Pumpkin” watch in good vintage condition. This watch dates from 1968 (deduced from its serial number 956844 and published tables) and was at that time the watch of choice for many airline pilots. It was also the choice of many U.S. airmen serving in the Vietnam War.The watch has a 24 hour display meaning the hour hand only rotates once each day. The dial is two-tone: grey for AM and black for PM. There is an internal bezel rotated by the top crown which enables you to keep time in another time zone. The date is shown at 3pm. The watch is big for a ‘vintage’, measuring 42mm across by 51mm down by 12mm thick, with 22mm lugs. The stainless steel case maintains its original sunburst finish and the plexi crystal is in good general shape with just a few (hardly noticeable) light marks. The watch has an automatic movement -it cases a serviced A. Schild 1902/03 movement. The dial configuration exhibits an internal turning bezel for setting the time in a different time zone.. The dial is two tone black for AM and PM. It is of course a 24 hour dial rather than the usual 12 dial in most watches. It takes little time to get used to and is in fact quite enjoyable when discussing the time with friends and colleagues! The movement has 25 jewels and a beat rate of 21600 v.p.h. The watch has just been serviced by my watchmaker which of course an added bonus (receipt provided)! It should be noticed that the “hacking” pin is no longer present. This is not at all unusual as many were removed or lost during servicing over the years with (hard to believe but true) many watchmakers totally unfamiliar with the concept! However, be assured that the lack of the hacking mechanism does not affect the day to day functioning of the watch in the slightest. The watch comes on a new steel bracelet with Glycine signed clasp, currently sized to fit up to a 7 1/2 inch wrist but it is fully adjustable and should fit a wrist of any size. The watch also comes with a facsimile of its original birch wooden box and outer cardboard Glycine box. This really adds a nice touch to the whole package. A little history: The year is 1967 and it was only six years previously that John F. Kennedy announced his support for “landing a man on the Moon and returning him safely to the Earth”. It also marks an era of new technology and design that we see reflected in the way the watches were shaped and equipped.SST stands for Supersonic Transport and we are led to believe that the mesmerizing engraving on the back of this new Airman model is a Boeing 2707. This ambitious project was cancelled in 1971 before a prototype had been completed. The aeroplane on the Airman SST manual (page 26-27) however depicts a Concorde. Looking at all the pictures of Supersonic transports one is unable to determine which plane really was the inspiration source for this extraordinary back. It might well have been the Russian Tupolev Tu-144. The Concorde and the Tupolev both had their first flight in 1968 and were hot news items during 1967.There you have it -a most interesting and desirable wristwatch which exudes aeronautic history!
