Tall quarto (12" x 9 1/4"). 84 pp. Elaborately gilt and black blind-stamped decorated red cloth hardcover. Decorated silked end papers. All edges brightly gilt. The paper/cloth hard cover shows signs of wear but the guilt and colour is still very vibrant -- a rarity to see any cover from the 19th century! Some slight wear on edge of spine.(pictured) 21 black & white photo-type plates from original art work of Kaulbach illustrating scenes from the works of Goethe. Plates are pasted on heavy card stock with red printed borders. Most depict Geothe’s female subjects. One plate shows Goethe with his Muse and Goethe on ice skates impressing a group offinely dressed ladies. One or two pages of German text by Fr. Spielhagen before each plate discuss characters in Goethe's works. A much better than Good copy. Beautiful illustrations. Text in German. All Pages are in very good condition. No missing parts. Pages shown are absolutely typical to the rest of the book. Book measures: 9-1/4 x 12 inches (23.5 x 30,5 cm.) and 7/8 inch (2.2 cm) thick
