The Gold Coast is richly detailed, featuring the old Kingdoms of Benin, Biafra, Miombo, and fortifications along the coastline. The map is an original copperplate engraving with hand coloring, offering a glimpse into 18th-century geographical understanding of the region. Cartographer: Jacques Nicolas Bellin (1703 – 1772), a French hydrographer, produced many significant maps during his 50-year career. He was a member of the Académie de Marine and the Royal Society of London, and many of his works were published in Antoine-François Prévost's Histoire Générale des Voyages.
