Description: 16.00 Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE StLouBrown's Bygone Days "Let Bygones Be back" Vintage 1964 bumper sticker promoting Republican presidential candidate Barry Goldwater, a U.S. senator from Arizona, and his running mate, U.S. Rep. William Miller of New York. The first two letters of the candidate’s name are stylized to make the banner say “GO 64—>” as well. Manufactured by Aldine Co., Los Angeles. Sticker measures 12 1/8” x 3 ½” Goldwater (1909-1998) was the conservative 1964 candidate for president whose shellacking by Democratic President Lyndon Johnson did not stop a movement to the right by the Republican Party, a long-term realignment that lead to the election of Ronald Reagan in 1980. In a speech at the convention that nominated Reagan, Goldwater repeated his campaign slogan from 16 years earlier: “Extremism in defense of liberty is no vice!” Johnson called Goldwater a dangerous and militant idealogue and mocked Goldwater’s other slogan, “In Your Heart, You Know He’s Right” with, “In Your Guts, You Know He’s Nuts” or, “In Your Heart, You Know He Might,” as in, might use nuclear weapons. Johnson’s campaign is credited with the birth of negative campaign advertising with the “Daisy” commercial in which a little girl counted petals on a flower, from 1 to 10, followed by a countdown from 10 to 1, ending with a nuclear explosion and mushroom cloud, never mentioning Goldwater but urging a vote for LBJ. A U.S. senator from 1953 to 1965 and again from 1969 to 1987, Goldwater became a national figure upon the publication of his 1960 book, Conscience of a Conservative. But he was progressive on a number of issues, such as desegregation. He was responsible for the desegregation of the Senate cafeteria when he took office, demanding that his Black legislative aide Katherine Maxwell be served the same as any other Senate employee.
