Canton, OH: circa [1900]. Second page of an autograph letter penned in black ink and filling half a sheet of cream 9-1/4 inch high by 5-3/4 inch wide "Jos. Biechele Soap Co." letterhead decorated with a color stars-and-stripes shield against a gray ground below the company's name. Signed "Emil Reinkendorff / Musical Director of the / Grand Army Band." There is some light vertical creasing to the letterhead. Folded twice for mailing. Very good. The Grand Army Republic Band was founded in 1866 by Canton, Ohio veterans of the Union Army. Emil Reinkendorff emigrated to the United States from Germany in 1874 at the age of 12. He was a student of the violin. He arrived in Canton in 1885 and directed the Grand Army Republic Band from 1887 to 1906. He was known to be a favorite of President McKinley. After refusing to direct the United States Marine Band in 1898, he became the Director of the Illinois Fifth Infantry Regimental Band from 1910 to 1916.
