Garcia's beyond-creative approach to the fret board here & cumulative through-song ' Theme(s) ' attack - is an Exquisite ! & " Prime " example as Garcia still growing as a Guitar Player - right before the eyes & minds of the loyal Dead Fan crowd. Multiple Jam-Pocket " Themes " is clearly the key element here, and what truly even extends this G.D. Live-Magic ! is the brilliant & immediate responsiveness of the fellow members of the Band - and especially both ! Phil Lesh ! & Bill Kreutzmann !! I mean when Jerry " zigs " they " zag ", and visa-versa ... giving this particular Dark Star a genuine & truly-unique ! Life of its very-own. I mean sure ... all Dark Stars from this ballpark 1972 period have this formula in tact - but, it's just really the way that this one smoothly-rolls, asks & answers its own questions, and has a bright spirit of moodiness - which, is of course the clear intent of Garcia. And for the fellow Guitar Players out there ? Well, you know how sometimes an Electric Guitar responds in the ' exact ' way that you want ? You're in complete-control, and the Music ! is virtually playing You ?! This is one of those times for Jerry, and there is not a single-note, bar, tempo, or down-beat which he doesn't master, attack, and twist into his own next idea of musical-direction. I mean there were some Unbelievable ! " Dark Stars " in '72 alone - such as the Stanley Theatre, Baltimore, The Spectrum, Veneta, and of course ... Europe '72 ! But, this one has a special way about it - and to me, it just ' pierces ' where it should pierce ... in every-possible way. As in a lot of ways too - it borders on the pinnacle reality, of the concept of tone. And too ... another almost unfair advantage that this Dark Star has on-tape, is the fact that China > Rider that follows ... continues this G.D. Magical ! ' Mood ' in near-equal fashion. As it is almost like the Band is rewarding themselves in pure on-stage Bliss ! for the Dark Star that was just born before their eyes. And, as a direct result ... This ! China > Rider has both legs, and serious muscle. And, another important note to the Taper and/or Tape Collectors from years past -- while the well-circulated SBD of this Show offered the Playin' / Tomorrow Is Forever / Dark Star > Drums > Dark Star / China > Rider / Sugar Mag ... this pro-release indeed also offers the ' Bird Song ' which to my ears - is yet Another ! '72 " Must-Hear " - overshadowed only by the other collective " Wow !?! " song versions that happen throughout this Show. As it should also be noted that the " Playin' " is Huge ! - and truly sets the stage, mood, and collective Band control ... which results in the Dark Star & China > Rider here. And, as tough as it is to say - but, still must be said ... like so-many of the other Shows in this '72 - '73 Era - this Fall Tour '72 is a prime-example of the Outer-Space ! like abilities of the Grateful Dead ... in the one-drummer format. It creates sonic openings often free of double down-beat frictions, which Garcia uses like a kid in a play ground ... and here ? I'd even say more like a kid in a candy store ! As so frequently ... the treble-string ascensions & launches aren't waiting on the down-beat timings - and his attacks are spot-on the rhythm - really taking you, and him for a Rock & Roll ride !
