I initially purchased this DP # 18 3-CD release at the merchandise booth inside a " Ratdog " Show ! at the Roseland Theater back in 2003 ( I think ? maybe 2002 ? ). I browsed through the " Ratdog " attire, and decided instead to opt for one of the newer " Dick's Picks " -- plus, the line of like 50 people behind me looked pretty sweaty & anxious to acquire their new Dog ! Tour-Dyes !! Boy, did I make the right choice - seriously ... these 2/3 & 2/5 1978 Shows are flat-out Rockers !!! I remember first listening to this 2/3 & 2/5 1978 " Dick's Picks ! " immediately the day after I bought it & I also distinctly remember being especially drawn-in instantly ! to the Liner Notes photos ( taken by B. Polanski, I believe ? ) of Garcia sporting his black " MARS " T-Shirt with the Black Ray Bans and his Irwin Tiger Guitar firmly in their rightful places. Though I'm generally a stickler for complete show releases, I must say that I am always intrigued when a couple / few shows ( two ( 2 ) in this case ) are compiled together for a professional release. Because when you take a really Hot Tour run like this one, and mix the songs / sets -- you know you are often in for a real treat. I mean after all, this is Mr. Latvala assembling the goods !! I personally look at Spring Tour 1978 as a somewhat natural extension of 1977, just a little extra studio-time together for the band - which can only help ! Plus, from a timetable perspective - these February '78 shows are a lot closer to October '77, than they are to February '78 ( which marks Keith & Donna leaving the Band ). To me personally, the 1/22/78 MacCourt show is '78 Grateful Dead at its Pre" Shakedown Street " Best ! - and these two shows are an audible continuation of those tones, interplay & general peak-magic synergy that the band was finding. Bertha > Good Lovin' Cook ! -- as does Passenger ! - Deal & Music Never Stopped ! You are also treated to a unique " Dupree's " kick-down from Jerry too. On Disc 2, the Estimated > Eyes > Playin' > Wheel > Playin' ! arguably rules this set, I initially felt ? But then Disc 3 just Crushes ! your speaker cones with some real big-league stuff ( & long, spaced-out intricate song versions too ! ) -- like Samson - Scarlet > Fire & Truckin' > Drums Space > Other One !!! This is Grateful Dead to behold, and it's no wonder why this is one of the more popular Dick's Picks releases. I think I made the right choice that day, as I don't think a Ratdog Tee could have quite done to my ears & mind what the music in this Dick's Picks Volume 18 3-CD Set has over the last decade -- no offense Bobby !
