The obverse shows the head of the sea god "NEPTUNE", with his trident across his shoulder, and the legend above "HALFPENNY". The reverse shows a whaling scene with four men in a small boat, harpooning whales by hand. The legend shows "PAYABLE AT I. FOW;ER'S LONDON WHALE FISHERY 1794". The edge is plain. John Fowler, an oil merchant and tin plate worker, in business in London, is thought to be the issuer. Both sides are a medium to dark brown color, and the surfaces show on a few marks from typical circulation and handling.
