Jackie Robinson was the first African-American to play in the major leagues. In 1947, his first year with the Dodgers, he won Rookie of the Year. Though he played just ten seasons, he helped the Dodgers appear in six World Series, although they won just one. When he retired in 1957, he had a career average of 311 and a reputation as a devastating base runner. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1962.
