Description: Here we have a fine bronze of the Muse Euterpe. Euterpe, was the Muse of song and poetry. (The bronze casting is by the renowned French foundry Barbedienne.) The nine Muses were each daughters of Zeus and led by Apollo, the God of light and truth. Each Muse was responsible for inspiring mortals with specific gifts. Euterpe, was the Muse of song and poetry. The bronze sculpture of Euterpe is attributed to french metalworker Ferdinand Barbdienne, (1810-1892), on the reverse one finds set into the bronze, the stamp of Collas and Barbedienne foundry: "Reduction Mecanique, A. Collas Brevete".The piece stands 9 1/2" tall. Is in fine condition, with little or no damage to the bronze or original patina. F. Barbedienne was an accomplished French bronze founder of the 19th Century. !n 1839 he partnered with the Parisian engineer Achille Collas (1795-1859), who had invented a way to reproduce sculpture on a reduced scale in a process he titled "reduction mechanique". Together, Barbedienne and Collas produced reduced scale versions of various famous statues and sculptures.
