From its founding in 1930, to its closure in 1999, the Clevenger Brothers Glass Company of Clayton, NJ was known to produce hand blown glass that could fool the experts, blowing classic reproductions of early American South Jersey glass. Offered here is an Albany Bottle, one of the earliest Clevenger historical flask reproductions. The front of the bottle carries a portrait of George Washington and “ALBANY GLASS WORKS ALBANY N.Y. The reverse of the bottle sports an image of a sailing ship. The Albany Bottle first appeared on a Clevenger wholesale price list from August 1935. It is a very crude copy of the GI-28 pint flask produced at the Albany Glass Works in Albany, New York circa 1850. This particular Albany Bottle is a 1930s example. Some of these early examples can be especially deceptive, although not this one due to a 1930s Clevenger paper label. The bottle is green in color, measures 5 5/8 inches tall, and is in very good to excellent condition. There are no CB initials on this bottle, found primarily on pieces made after 1966. Beneath the paper label there is a pontil mark within a circular depression.
