Description: Guernica by Alfonso Iannelli, after Picasso, circa 1940s. Iannelli (1886-1965) was a major American sculptor, poster and graphic designer. He collaborated with Frank Lloyd Wrighton the Midway Gardens, Chicago, 1912-1915. “I discovered this gouache by Iannelli in the late 1980s when Kelmscott Gallery acquired the artist’s estate. It was in a portfolio from his studio with a number of preliminary sketches for the same subject. All of the other items in the portfolio were from the 1940s or earlier. It is superbly rendered and after comparisons to Dora Marr’s photographs (Image 3 from Russell’s 1980 book Picasso’s Guernica) or the mural in progress, it is clearly not a copy of any of them, but a derivation. It would be interesting to know when Maar’s photographs were first published, but we have not determined that yet. We assume it must have been a periodical of some sort that came into Iannelli’s hands. I have no idea what Iannelli had in mind when he created this work, except that the subject obviously meant a great deal to him. It remains an extraordinary curiosity as well as a very fine work of art”, Scott Elliott. The gouache is on grey paper, measures 10-1/8 x 12-3/4 inches, in a 16 x 23 inch mat. Also includes: Pencil sketch by Iannelli - image 8 (sketch of Picasso’s image 10), a 2 x 4 inch transparency in black mat, and a copy of Frank Russell’s Picasso’s Guernica.
