Description: This is an original vintage "Mama Bear" lounge chair designed by Hans Wegner for AP Stolen, ca. 1956, Denmark. These chairs were made by expert cabinetmakers by hand with only the finest materials. This chair retains its original horsehair innards, as well as new foam. This chair was purchased in Denmark in 1956. We purchased it from the original owners and restored it to excellent vintage condition. The chair is wrapped in new old stock nubby Irish wool from the 1990's. The fabric best matches an oatmeal color, while having speckles of darker material here and there that adds dimension. The chair is referred to as the "Mama Bear" chair as a match to the "Papa Bear" chair also designed by Wegner in the 1950's. The chair is named for its large, welcoming form, which is reminiscent of a bear's embrace. The "paws" are teak, along with the legs. This particular chair is quite rare, as most others. This chair is a timeless piece of furniture history. It represents a movement towards functional, organic design in the United States. While this chair was handmade and sold in Denmark, the bear chairs represent Wegner's puncturing of the American modern furniture market in the 1950's.
