The paper on the back of picture frame read as : Harrison Begay (NAVAJO ARTIST) One of the outstanding contemporary Indian painters, Harrison Begay was born on the Navajo Reservation in 1917 near the White Cane Trading Post in Arizona. From 1934 until 1940 he studied arts and crafts at the U.S. Indian School in Santa Fe, New Mexico. He served with the U.S. Army in Europe from 1942 until 1945, returning to painting in 1946. In 1951 he helped to form Tewa Enterprises with the purpose of making fine hand screened examples of Indian art available to the public and increasing interest in Indian art and the work of his fellow Indian artists. Mr. Begay has exhibited at the Arizona State Fair, the Gallup Inter-Tribal Indian Ceremonial, the Philbrook Art Center in Tulsa, and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. His paintings are also found in many galleries, museums and private collections in this county and abroad.
