Description: Here we have a breathtaking original Harry Leith-Ross (British/American, 1886-1973) en plein air oil-on-canvas-on-board seascape painting. Undated. Signed indistinctively, lower middle (see photo with red rectangle surrounding the signature.) Depicts waves crashing against shoreline rocks, very likely in the area of Rockport, Maine, where Leith-Ross taught during the summers at an art school that he co-founded. Stained wood frame. Tags from a 1999 auction shown in photos. Vintage: undated; materials on back suggest very-vintage, 1920s-1940s Approximate measurements: Painting: 20" x 16"Sight: 19.75" x 15.75"Frame: 22.5" x 18.75"Condition: Our photographs reveal the condition best -- please enlarge and zoom in on them, and examine them carefully. We often add graphics such as arrows, circles, and text boxes to our photos to point out things of interest that might be hard to see, such as a price tag or maker's mark, as well as to highlight many condition flaws. Overall very good condition, with overall light wear consistent with age. Light dirt accumulation throughout. Wear to edges due to frame friction not visible when painting is centered in frame. Painting technically fits frame, although it could use some tightening up as painting is somewhat loose within it. Sits fine, not in any danger of falling out of frame, just not a great fit. Frame is very basic with gaps showing at corners. Painting is far superior to the frame and would definitely benefit from an upgraded replacement, which shouldn't be too expensive given that the board is a standard size. If you can't afford a new one, try a thrift store, where frames in this size abound.
