Description: This Victory Ball commemorated Harvey Haddix's 7/3/62 win against the Houston Colt .45s in their first year as a franchise. The ball details numerous particulars and stats from the game, including hits and RBIs for Clemente and Mazeroski. This ball was from Haddix's 123rd career win, his 7th of the season. Haddix had a great career but is best known for pitching 12 perfect innings, retiring 36 consecutive batters, in a game against the Milwaukee Braves on May 26, 1959; the Pirates lost the game in the 13th inning. Some regard Haddix's pitching performance as the most dominant ever. Haddix was also on the Pirates team that won the 1960 World Series, and was the winning pitcher of Game Seven when Bill Mazeroski clubbed a walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth. Victory balls for pitchers are usually last-out balls or otherwise used in the game. They are carefully detailed with stats, encouragement, doodles, or other writing by someone with the team and presented to the pitcher to keep in his personal collection. These balls are special because, unlike game-used balls today, these each have a colorful aesthetic and personality, they're very personal to the player and his achievement, and they're from a bygone and revered era in baseball history. But unlike much other historical game-used memorabilia, these balls are essentially self-authenticating because they are so detailed and unique and it would be virtually impossible to recreate them and their antique patina. Please review photos carefully (pedestal not included). This ball is decades old so it has aged slightly but it still displays beautifully.
