Description: Harwich MA Revolutionary War Gun Powder House Cape Cod Pairpoint Glass Cup Plate 42 Harwich Massachusetts Vintage Window Decoration Handcrafted on Cape Cod, Made in USA The Gun Powder House is one of the rarest cup plates in my collection. The vintage crystal Pairpoint Glass cup plate was limited to 526 plates before the mould was destroyed. The powder house stored ammunition from the outbreak of the Revolutionary War until Civil War times. The carved-wood eagle was mounted at the roof's peak and dates to the Civil War era. Pairpoint cup plate 42 is hand pressed crystal glass. The designer was Annette Stoneton and the engraver was Alvin White. The booklet Pairpoint Glass Cup Plates: The First Fifty by Leonard Pagett and Orva Heissenbuttel description reads: "This cup plate features the historic powder house in Harwich, Massachusetts, and was commissioned by the Harwich Historical Society to celebrate their 25th anniversary in 1978. Built during the Revolutionary War, it was used for the storage of gunpowder." Fun Fact: In a recent picture of the powder house I noticed the eagle is no longer on its roof. Handcrafted on Cape Cod using time-honored techniques, these 3.5 inch cup plates have subtle variations that highlight the artisan's skill. Each cup plate is crafted using a mold created with a hammer and chisel, and then pressed with molten glass using an antique press. This manufacturing process results in cup plates that are similar yet possess their own distinctive characteristics. Look closely and you'll find the artisan's initials and the Pairpoint trademark within the design.
