Description: "You can never be too rich, too thin, or have too much Haviland." If your heart is still in the Age of Elegance, you will agree. According to the people at Haviland, the china I have here was probably hand painted in the Victorian Age, the Edwardian Age, or even later----between 1894 and 1931. And yet, neither they nor any of the Haviland experts to whom I sent photos, were able to identify the pattern. They know that it was a "blank," but the design painted on it is a mystery. I received the following explanation from the Haviland Collectors International Foundation. "I believe that you have a Schleiger 20 variation - white with a plain gold band. The backmark dates the manufacture to between 1894 and 1931. The absence of a decorator mark means that the pieces were not factory decorated, but rather painted by the person whose name is on the back. This is called amateur, or hobbyist decorated. There were many companies that sold plain whiteware [blanks] and stencils that could be used to decorate china. Women would paint china as a hobby or sometimes to supplement the family income. "This is absolutely genuine Haviland. There are many variations of the pattern Schleiger 20. Some have a single gold rim band, some have a double one, some have black and gold, etc. I believe that yours may be Schleiger 20a...It appears that the monogram was done with a stencil. "Your service has to make a really pretty table setting. Very elegant." I do agree that this pattern is, in its simplicity, "very elegant." Oddly enough, it belonged to a farmer's wife in Indiana who was born in the 1890s. I do not know how this woman came into possession of this exquisite, virtually transparent bone china from France, but she must have kept it in her cupboard, for it is apparent that these dishes have not been used. There is, however, a chip off the edge of one saucer and two off the rim of a second saucer. I have shown you the chips in the last four photos here, and because of them, have heavily discounted these sets (20% off the ENTIRE ORDER). My suggestion is that, if you want to take advantage of this incredible bargain to acquire some pristine French Haviland, you can always replace the two chipped saucers by buying replacements from one of the many piece-replacement sites online. The dinner plate is 9 5/8 inches across, the bread is 6 1/4 inches, the saucer is 5 1/2 and the cup is 3 3/4 inches across the rim. In its delicacy, it is clearly a teacup, not a coffee cup!
