Bankers - Bank Check 1868 Lewis Hershfield came to Montana in 1864 with a train of 26 wagons laden with goods and sold the whole outfit to Monroe Salisbury. Hershfield reached Virginia City July 3rd, 1864 and bought up a large quantity of gold dust, which he made a large profit. In 1865 he established a bank (Merchants' National) in Helena and a branch in Virginia City. In 1880, he established a bank in Benton, in 1883 a bank in White Sulphur Springs. For many years he was a prominent business leader, advisor and a financier that was said to be second to none in the West. When it was decided that the World's Fair was to be held in Chicago, Hershfield was named as one of the commissioners for Montana. During the 1870s, Lewis Hershfield moved his bank to the mining boom town of Helena, Montana. In 1878, his brother, Aaron Hershfield (1848-1918), joined him in the business, which became L.H. Hershfield & Brother. In 1882, the bank became nationally chartered as the Mercantile National Bank of Helena. Through the bank, Hershfield invested in mines and other banks in the area. The Mercantile National Bank went into receivership in 1897 after depositors withdrew their money.Showing only minor signs of wear and handling consistent with its age. Cut canceled at center.
