Description: Henri Farge (1884 -1970) was a French painter and etcher who specialized in social commentary works of art and, as you can see from this monotype, some political commentary as well. He generally lived in Paris but also traveled widely and spent significant time in New York city. A monotype is a type of print made by drawing or painting on a smooth, nonabsorbent surface. The image is then transferred onto a sheet of paper by pressing the two together, usually using a printing press. Monotyping produces a unique print, or monotype, since most of the ink is removed during the initial pressing and a second print is usually not possible. A monotype is thus most like a painting. The print is an interesting commentary on world politics of the time, probably the late 1950s and early 1960s. In the upper right hand corner is written "'he is a jellyfish' MacDonald dixit". On the back, in the upper left corner is written "A.38 sujet politique monotype". My best interpretation is that the image is of the left-wing American writer and commentator, Dwight MacDonald, with his arm around Soviet Premier Nikita Kruschchev and both are looking down at what appears to be Josef Stalin in the form of a jellyfish. The print may refer to a statement made by Kruschchev in 1961 in response to a call from Andrei Sakharov, the Russian scientist, who was apparently trying to explain radioactive fallout to Kruschchev. The latter said, "Sakharov don't try to tell us what to do or how to behave. I'd be a jellyfish and not chairman of the Council of Ministers if I listened to people like Sakharov." This monotype is from my personal collection which I am beginning to sell off. Unless noted otherwise in the description, the prints and art that I sell are not "reproductions". For example, offered maps are of the period. Please check my other listings for additional items of interest. I will combine shipping.
