Description: Up for sale is a rare limited edition color lithograph titled "Rosace" by master artist Henri Matisse, published in 1958 by Mourlot, Paris. The image is based off the original paper cut out from 1952, and in 1958 the image was turned into a lithograph by Mourlot. This particular color lithograph is in great condition with bold colors. Only about 2000 impressions were created, and no hand signed impressions exist. The image size is 9x9" and the frame size is 16 x 16". The piece is framed archivally with a unique pearl frame with acid free materials and UV protective plexiglass acylic, valued at $400. Discussion: In 1954, a few months before his death, Henri Matisse was commissioned to create a stained-glass window in memory of Abby Aldrich Rockefeller in the Union Church, New York. La Rosace, the maquette for the window, was Matisses last work. In 1941 Matisse was diagnosed with abdominal cancer and underwent surgery that left him bed bound. With the help of his assistants, Matisse began to create work through paper collages. The paper was pre painted in gouache by his assistants and cut by Matisse to produce works that crossed the boundaries between painting and sculpture. These were initially small in scale, increasingly becoming mural sized. Matisse died in 1954 and it was these later cutouts that became the works he is most well known for in the public mind. As his very last project Matisse worked with the famous Mourlot Freres, with whom Matisse had worked for decades, to reinterpret the cut-outs as original lithographs. A suite of 39 images was printed from the stone blocks at the Paris atelier. Matisse personally directed, oversaw and supervised the first pulls of the lithographs shortly before his death in 1954.
