Description: Welcome to my listing for:Heywood Bros. & Co. Chair Makers, Boston 1894 Billhead J.P. Marsh* (#7) In 1826, five heywood brothers from Gardner, MA formed a business making wooden chairs and tables at home. As business increased, they transitioned to industrial-level manufacture with steam-bent wood frames and cane or wicker seats, backs and sides. In 1897, they partnered with a local rival, the Wakefield Rattan Co., whose founder, Cyrus Wakefield, got his start on the Boston docks buying up lots of discarded rattan, which was used as cushioning material in the holds of cargo ships, and transforming it into furnishings. The marriage did well for a time before tastes began to change and the need to change up through the Art Deco style and again and all the way up to the 1970’s. In 1981, after a long, mostly very successful run, they went bankrupt. This billhead was from the years just before the Heywood-Wakefield partnership. *J.P. Marsh operated a retail store located in Bethel, VT that sold furniture and carpets, among many other items, in the 1880's-90'sJerry's 2 cents: A must have if you have any Heywood or Heywood-Wakefield pieces of furniture!
