A graduate of the oil painting department of the Tokyo Fine Arts School, he began making woodblock prints after making New Year's cards while recovering from tuberculosis. During this period, when he was trying to shift from realism to abstraction, he had a fateful encounter with woodblock prints. And he tries to create a deep expression that can be compared to oil painting with this woodblock print. At first, Hagiwara was a groping artist, but he created a succession of groundbreaking techniques such as double-sided printing and woodcut intaglio, and suddenly became a darling of the Japanese printmaking world.
