Published by Hendrik and Cornelis Verdussen in Antwerp 1707. ***This is the textual, doctrinal component of the grand project which was to encompass the illustrations to the "Evangelicae Imagines..." THE BINDING: Re-bind required. REAR COVER COMPLETELY DETACHED, but included, along with its marbled end-paper and free (blank) endpaper. Front cover firm. Spine present but with losses at the rear edge and will need replacing. Looks like high quality late 18th century tree calf full leather binding. Folio size: 14.75 inches high x 9.5 inches wide, nearly 2 inches thick and very, very heavy! CONDITION AND FEATURES:The full text of Natalis' "Annotations and Meditations....", pages complete, numbering 636 pages of text as called for, and in good clean condition. Text block is holding firm. Marbled end-papers, free front endpaper and full page prelimary engraving which is unsigned but bears the publisher's details. Printed throughout on "laid" paper typical of the 17th century and the first few years of the 18th century with narrow vertical chainlines. Main title page printed in red and black with an (unsigned) emblematical engraving. Woodcut devices at the end of many sections. Dedication to Pope Clement VIII at the beginning, with the inscription of Jacobus Ximenez. A page and a half dedication to the reader, "Lectoris". Includes a numbered index to the engravings of the "Evangelicae...", which was a companion volume of illustrations. As you go through the book, you will note that there are different typefaces used. This suggests to me that the publisher's claim to be the "editio ultima" (final edition) notwithstanding, the book probably re-prints very large portions of earlier editions. Just my thoughts... ABOUT THE WORK: Hieronymus Natalis, sometimes written as Jerome Nadal, Jeronimo Nadal) was born in Mallorca, Spain in 1507 and died in Rome in 1580. He was a Spanish Jesuit priest in the first generation of the companions of St. Ignatius Loyola. Shortly before Loyola died he asked Natalis to oversee a grand literary project to facilitate the contemplations of Jesus through the Gospels, intended initially to assist Jesuit novices in their devotions during a thirty day retreat. Its impact, both in text and illustration, was to become far, far wider. The project was not completed/published until the early 1590s, so Natalis never lived to see its implementation or its effect. The publishers here, Hendrik and Cornelis Verdussen, were part of an Antwerp-based printing dynasty which began in the late 16th century and which lasted until around 1800. They specialised in religious works, and works in Spanish and by the end of the 17th century had produced over 20 per cent of the Spanish books printed in the Netherlands, as well as re-printing earlier Verdussen texts. ***I am not an academic theologian, and my Latin is fairly basic, but I will happily do my best to answer any questions.
