Description: HISTORY OF MISSION SAN GABRIEL ~ OLD FRANCISCAN MISSION NEAR LOS ANGELES - 1921. Shipped with USPS Media Mail. Scarce early original copy of “History of Mission SAN GABRIEL - OLD FRANCISCAN MISSION - NEAR LOS ANGELES - CALIFORNIA” by Father Eugene Sugranes. This book was written from historical notes taken from old manuscripts and records, accurately compiled after diligent research, with mention of the other California Franciscan Missions and their founders. The Mission San Gabriel is a fully functioning Roman Catholic mission and a historic landmark in San Gabriel, California. The settlement was founded by Spaniards of the Franciscan order on "The Feast of the Birth of Mary," September 8, 1771, as the fourth of what would become 21 Spanish missions in California. San Gabriel Mission, named after the Archangel Gabriel and often referred to as the "Godmother of the Pueblo of Los Angeles", was designed by Father Antonio Cruzado, who hailed from Córdoba, Spain. Cruzado gave the building its strong Moorish architectural influence. The capped buttresses and the tall, narrow windows are unique among the missions of the California chain. Soft cover book measures 5 1/4 x 7 3/4 inches and is in very good condition with chips to spine and outside corners. It contains 90 pages and 14 photographs pertaining to the mission. There are no missing or damaged pages and no underlining/highlighting of text or writing in the margins (see scans).
