Now Washington & Jefferson College, Jefferson College in Canonsburg, Washington Co., Pennsylvania, was one of three log colleges begun in the county by Presbyterian missionaries in the 1790's. It was founded by the Rev. John McMillan in 1792 amidst the troubles of the Whiskey Rebellion of western Pennsylvania, and soon came to be called the Canonsburg Academy. Rev. McMillan was president and instructor for some twenty years, and when in 1802 the name was changed to Jefferson College, he was made a Trustee . A rivalry of sorts between the Washington College and the Jefferson College ended after the American Civil War, with both colleges suffering financial troubles, and merging into one in 1865.
