JG 74, based at Neuburg Air Base, was tasked with both air superiority and intercept missions during the Cold War. The F-4F, a downgraded export variant of the F-4, was optimized for dogfighting and equipped with air-to-air missiles. Its robust capabilities allowed JG 74 to maintain readiness against potential Warsaw Pact threats. The squadron often participated in NATO exercises, strengthening defense ties and improving tactical skills across allied forces. McDonnell Douglas F-4F Phantom II Designed as a fleet defense fighter for the US Navy, the F-4 Phantom was first flown on May 27, 1958. This twin-engine, long-range all-weather fighter/bomber proved highly adaptable and served in the Marine Corps and the US Air Force as well as in the Navy. During the Vietnam War, it was the principal air superiority fighter for the Navy and the Air Force and was also used for reconnaissance and ground attack.
