One his 15 mile trek to Mass one morning, a beautiful woman appeared to him in a cloud. This woman was the Virgin Mary and she instructed him to build a Church on that very site. The Bishop was doubtful after hearing Juan's story and wanted Juan to bring proof of what had taken place. Our Lady told Juan to go where they had first met and there he found beautiful roses growing in the frozen soil. Juan gathered the roses (a type which did not grow in Mexico) in his cloak and took them back to the Bishop. Not only were the roses miraculous, but inside Juan's cloak was a beautiful image of Our Lady. A Church was built on the site and many were converted.Saint Juan Diego Cuauhtlatoatzin, also known as Juan Diego,a native of Mexico, is the first Roman Catholic indigenous saint from the Americas. He is said to have been granted an apparition of the Virgin Mary on four separate occasions in December 1531 at the hill of Tepeyac, then a rural area but now within the borders of Mexico City. The Basilica of Guadalupe, located at the foot of the hill of Tepeyac, claims to possess Juan Diego's mantle or cloak (known as a tilma)on which an image of the Virgin is said to have been impressed by a miracle asa pledge of the authenticity of the apparitions. These apparitions and the imparting of the miraculous image are the basis of the veneration of Our Lady Of Guadalupe, which is ubiquitous in Mexico, prevalent throughout the Spanish-speaking Americas, and increasingly widespread beyond. As a result, the Basilica of Guadalupe is now the world's major center of pilgrimage for Roman Catholics, receiving 22 million visitors in 2010. Juan Diego was beatified in 1990 and canonized in 2002.
