Homestead AFB Plaque Chief of Safety USAF Thunderbirds Wild Weasel Pilot 1977-78

Description: Vintage plaque presented to Lt. Colonel Marion “Mack” Angel, Chief of Safety, Homestead AFB, FL, December 1977 – May 1978. The wood plaque features a metal “safety” emblem and an inscribed brass plate. The plaque measures approximately 5 1/2” x 6 1/2”. A mounting hole and felt “bumper pads” are on the back of the plaque. The plaque is from the estate of retired USAF Lt. Colonel Marion "Mack" Angel (1937-2024), a distinguished fighter pilot who flew the F-100 Super Sabre, F-105 Thunderchief, and F-4E Phantom II. Lt. Colonel Angel flew 100 F-105 Wild Weasel combat missions “up north” during the Vietnam War. He was also a member of the USAF “Thunderbirds” aerial demonstration team from 1967-1969, flying the F-100 and F-4E in the Left Wing position (aircraft number 2). The plaque appears to be in good to very good used condition with signs of wear and age, such as scratches, scrapes, abrasions, nicks, pits, indentations, smudges, rub marks, and some oxidation and/or discoloration on the metal “torches” on the front of the plaque. There are several very small holes or indentations near the bottom of the back of the plaque. Some of these flaws (e.g., scratches, scrapes, and abrasions on the unit insignia and brass plate) are most noticeable when the plaque is viewed at certain angles and lighting. It’s possible that some of these blemishes are characteristics of the wood or a result of the manufacturing process. Please see photos, as they constitute part of the description.
