Description: Honore Daumier (1808-1879); "Theatre du Palais Royal"; lithograph; from Le Charivari, July 18th, 1837. (ref: Hazard 2585). Initialed "h D" in the stone, text verso. Impression and publisher Chez Aubert. Sheet approx. 10 x 12". Image very fine, some toning outside lithographic plate; wide, uneven margins. One of more than 4000 lithos and wood engravings Daumier contributed to Le Charivari over a 42 year period! This image from the Palais Royal was inspired by a vaudeville by the prolific Cogniard Brothers. The quote below the image (referencing a frugal dinner of Dutch cheese) is from a comedy by the famous clown team of Bobeche and Galimafre. A wonderful example of Daumier's genius from the legendary French publication Le Charivari.
