This special, rectangular collertor coin is the next member of the series presenting Hungarian national parks that was launched in 2010, joining the coins for the Őrség, Duna-Dráva, Duna-Ipoly, Bükk and Kiskunság National Parks. The coin follows the lead of the previous ones in the series in terms of its theme and motifs, with the front featuring an animal or plant typical for the individual national parks and the back presenting a landscape or distant view of a building. The Hortobágy National Park coin shows two images that are typical for the Puszta: a crane, which is also used as a heraldic animal; and a view of the steppe, with a draw well as the central motif. Hortobágy National Park was Hungary’s first national part, created by the National Nature Protection Authority on 1 January 1973. It has an area of 82,000 hectares. At its meeting on 30 November 1999, the UNESCO World Heritage Committee inscribed the entire area of the Hortobágy National Park on its list of World Cultural and Natural Heritage. The Directorate of the Hortobágy National Park is located in Debrecen. Hortobágy National Park is Central Europe’s largest grass steppe and comprises 4 land conservation districts and 19 independent natural conservation areas.
