Description: Very Limited, number 127 of 200! Also comes with post card flyer from the original exhibition. Published on the occasion of Peter Sutherland’s 2009 exhibition at Hope Gallery in Los Angeles, Hot Coals Only is part catalogue and part artist’s book, consisting of recent photographs and photocollages printed in color, black and white, and with black ink on green paper. Sutherland’s work depicts moments of poetry and sublime beauty plucked from seemingly unremarkable situations and grimy environments. These images are accompanied by occasional autobiographical passages, written by the artist, that offer some insight into the formation of his visual language. “Sutherland’s photography is documentary in style, but the images aren’t simply literal - they conjure more than they document. Sutherland’s heroes are the Maysles brothers, Werner Herzog, and Danny Lyon, documentarians who put themselves in situations of intense living, capturing strange narratives that say as much about the recorder as the recorded. None of the photos in Hot Coals Only are taken in Sutherland’s home of Manhattan. Many of the characters are strangers and the places foreign, yet the work feels personal and autobiographical.”–from the introduction by David Jacob Kramer
