Matov occupied a prominent place in the highest leadership of the Macedonian Revolutionary Organization. He was the first president of the Skopje Revolutionary Committee. In Skopje, he laid the foundations of M.R.O., where he was also the director of the Pedagogical School until the summer of 1898. From the fall of 1898 to the spring of 1901, Matov was a member of the Central Committee of TMORO, and from November 1902 to December 31, 1904, he was a member of the Foreign Representation of TMORO in Sofia. He was in that position in 1907-1908 until the Young Turk Revolution. Hristo Matov was also involved in the construction of the MRO system: he asked and defined almost all questions related to the program objectives, the foundations, principles and forms of the revolutionary activity of the Internal Macedonian Revolutionary Organization, as well as the organization, politics and with relations to internal and external factors. Hristo Matov was also one of the leading figures in the Macedonian Revolutionary Organization, involved in the ideological debates and in the ideological and political direction of VMORO after the Ilinden Uprising, especially after the general Rila Congress of 1905. He was one of the most meritorious persons who kept the Revolutionary Organization from disintegrating and from turning into a revenge group, after the severe upheavals in 1907-1908 connected with the bloody self-dispute in VMRO and the final split within it.
