Description: Voodoo Gods: An Inquiry into Native Myths and Magic in Jamaica and Haiti Zora Hurston, 1939 First UK Edition. J M Dent & Sons Ltd, London. pp: [i-vi], vii-x, 290, [1], pub. ad; 24 striking b/w photos, two maps. The 1939 UK first edition of Zora Hurston’s Tell My Horse ... published the USA a year earlier in 1938. This fascinating work presents an authorative and respectful first-hand account of voodoo rituals and voodoo culture in the Caribbean, and is probably the first work of its kind to address the widespread misconceptions of voodoo as demonised by western film-makers, authors, and academics with their reductions to caricatures of vengeful black magic and devil worshiping. Chapters include accounts on rituals and ceremonies, marriage and women in the Caribbean, Haitian politics, voodoo in Haiti, zombieism, secret societies, songs of worship with musical notation, and a lot more. Octavo sized (221mm X 146mm) cloth hardcover without jacket. Original publisher’s black cloth with blind-stamped houngan priest motif on front board, gilt spine lettering, and black top edge. Also, this copy is a very little used ex-Boots Library copy, and the only evidence of this is a request to purchase slip inserted between maps - absolutely no stamps, inscriptions, annotations, binding treatment, etc. - this is a totally unadulterated copy. And finally there is to the lower edge a publisher's remainder mark, supporting the fact that this work, along with Hurston's earlier works, were at the time of first publication little appreciated, often received negative reception, and never sold in great numbers. Condition Binding shows neat edges and corners, and clean, clear cloth with clear spine lettering. Spine ends are a little bumped and there is light wear to the fore-corner tips and lower hinge corners. The inner margin between signatures A and B is cracked where the netting does show a little [see photo], but netting is not damaged and is fully intact, boards are sturdy. p210 has what appears to be a 1cm [tea or a drinks-splash?] that has soaked through to a couple of leaves before and after, otherwise leaves are near-crisp overall, are llightly age-goldened, and show the occasional light spot or light blemish here-and-there. A decent and very presentable copy of this highly engaging and elusive first edition title on voodoo culture in the Caribbean.
